How Many and When?
When the subject of whether or not
to implement a HPV mass vaccination campaign came up for debate in the
Irish house of parliament in Nov 2008, there was disagreement on how many
lives it might save.
The opposition party's health spokesman, Dr James
Reilly, interpreting figures from a Cost-Benefit Analysis
by '
The Health Information and Quality Authority' claimed that
"
It
is the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) who is wrong when he
says 51 Deaths cannot be averted".
(Obviously, the Taoiseach had a
different view).
Should I be getting
this?..Fortunately for the ordinary Irish citizen, or to
be exact, the U-14 schoolgirl-target of the injection, the
actual number of lives saved (or not) by the proposed mass vaccination
of 12 year olds is easy to work out. Thus we can spare
ourselves from that most undesirable of predicaments - having to
take the word of a politician about anything.
So, by knowing some basic statistics concerning cervical cancer mortality
rates and vaccine effectiveness, one can calculate that which, for
their own reasons, our political leaders have trouble agreeing
on.
In order to provide encouragement to the youngsters to
follow this act of self-empowerment, ComeLook.Org is throwing in
2 tickets ("The Fame Package") to see Lady Gaga in concert in Dublin in
October.
Winner
will be drawn at random from those who choose the mathematically correct answers (from multiple choice).
Closing date is 30 Sep.
